Accommodation Strategies
Below, I have provided a few accommodation strategies used to make an inclusive environment.
Visual cues are a great tool for incorporating into the classroom. Visual cues help present materials, and allow students to physically interact with their learning.
Allowing for extra time on a task or a test allows the student to focus on what the questions is asking of them. For example, during a test I would send the student to anther classroom or have the student write it in a quiet area in the classroom.
Making sure that the instructions given are straight to the point of the task or using simple vocabulary. I would make sure the question are provided in steps of what is needed to be done and each step allows the student to know what it is I am exactly looking for. This means including and providing more prompts for students.
Classroom Management Strategies and Resources
"Have You Filled A Bucket Today" is a great book to incorporate when teaching kindness and respect within the classroom. This book teaches children about the importance of being bucket fillers, and is a great resource to use when dealing with classroom management. For example, as a teacher I would create little bags (that represent buckets) and fill them with pom pom's when I see a student has done a good deed or has shown respect towards others. When a student has misbehaved I would take one pom pom out. This is a very useful strategy that I have used in my own classrooms.
A great activity to tie in with this booklet is creating a T-Chart and as a class have students come up with ideas of what bucket fillers and bucket dippers are.
